God in a box! Humans seem to be bent on
creating God in their own image. They have
this need of making sure that God is on their
side-that God is one of them. It's actually a
subtle way of controlling God to work for
them. By putting God in a box, He is limited
of His power and localized so people can
visit Him whenever they want to. Oh, and
people can also not visit God, too.
The same kind of thing is continually done
with Jesus. Everyone wants to put Jesus into
his or her own image, religious system or
cause. Jesus has become the brand for
Christianity and within Christianity those
who claim to be devoted to Jesus fight one
another.
One of the most amazing tragedies in modern
times occurred in Rwanda, Africa. The
genocide was committed not only by the
soldiers but also by civilians. Both the
victims and the perpetrators were for the
most part Christians-Hutu Christians and
Tutsi Christians. Pastors blessed the
murders. Church leaders sanctioned the Hutu
policy against the Tutsi. Very few Christians
refused to participate in the violence. They
had conveniently placed Jesus in a box. He
was not the Lord of Lords and King of Kings
to them. He was fit into their tribal boxes,
so they were driven by their tribal instincts
rather than Jesus as Lord.
SECRET #52 is: The follower of Jesus
knows his Master does not fit into any
box. If you place Jesus in a box, He
can be easily ignored and kept from the
people who need Him most. There is no one who
ever walked this earth who can compare with
Jesus. He is incomparable, irresistible, the
most unique person ever. More than any other,
Jesus walked what He talked consistently!
Jesus cannot be fit into anyone's box. He
just is too awesome and amazing!
I want to share five ways Jesus proves He
cannot be fit into a box of any kind:
FIRST-He wasn't like any other kind of king
ever. All of the kings of the earth have
asked their subjects to die for them. Jesus
is the only king who ever died for His
followers. No king such as this can fit into
any man-made box.
SECOND-He was unorthodox in His methods of
operation. The most unique method was His way
of launching a movement. Most would do
everything possible to find ways to persuade
the masses to change their ways. Jesus did
just the opposite. He set out to launch a
global movement by selecting 3 men to come
and be with Him-to change the world. Although
Jesus did some amazing things with extremely
large groups, for the most part He chose to
avoid the crowds.
THIRD-Jesus' teachings were revolutionary and
unprecedented. He taught that it was better
to give than to receive. He taught to pay
more attention to your heart than to your
actions. But the most revolutionary teaching
of all was how to eliminate your enemies. He
taught His followers to love their enemies,
thereby eradicating their enemy status.
FOURTH-Jesus had a Kingdom strategy that
would never fit into anyone's
thinking-anyone's box. At the peak of His
popularity Jesus announces His Kingdom
strategy. It was to die to demonstrate
sacrificial love. By dying on the Roman cross
Jesus turned the Roman symbol of domination
and power inside out and upside down into a
symbol of sacrificial love. This is too
magnanimous for any box!
FIFTH-He preferred the disenfranchised, the
broken and the poor-not the religious, but
the sinners-not the powerful, but the poor.
His blueprint for global revolution rests
with ordinary, uneducated people.
Jesus' teachings, methods, focus and actions
are just too awesome-too God-like-to ever fit
into anyone's box. You know what seems to
make the most sense here? Don't even attempt
to place Jesus in a box. He doesn't fit and
will be sure to jump out or break down its
walls. SECRET #52 is: The follower of
Jesus knows his Master does not fit into any
box.

We are making our way through 75 secrets of
following Jesus. Jesus is known as the
mystery who was to be revealed. And, the more
you examine Jesus and His teachings the more
is revealed about life, meaning and
fulfillment. Through these secrets we can
understand more and more of what life is all
about and how to live our lives more abundantly.
There are two levels of this secret I want to
discuss. FIRST-There is an everyday, common
understanding of what would Jesus do. This is
learning how to walk, talk, love and think
like Jesus. In the widespread WWJD? movement
there was a certain awareness that was raised
with this question-WWJD?-What Would Jesus Do?
What's interesting is that every time you ask
that question, you already intuitively know
the answer. To ask "What Would Jesus Do?" is
to know what He would do. The question
delivers the answer right away! Whenever you
bring the light of Jesus into a situation,
the way, the truth and the life all become clear.
There is a SECOND level of understanding what
you should do or what you should say. This
level is when you are put on the spot in a
very difficult situation. How will you know
what to say? This brings us to
SECRET #51: The follower of Jesus
doesn't worry what to say when put on the
spot.
When Jesus first sent out His disciples, He
gave them specific instructions on the
approach He wanted them to take with a given
village. He warned them that there will be
times when they will be in a very difficult
spot and might become worried what to say.
So, Jesus teaches a most interesting
principle. He says, "Behold, I send you
out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be
shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. But
beware of men, for they will hand you over to
the courts and scourge you in their
synagogues; and you will even be brought
before governors and kings for My sake, as a
testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But
when they hand you over, do not worry about
how or what you are to say; for it will be
given you in that hour what you are to say.
For it is not you who speak, but it is the
Spirit of your Father who speaks in you."
(Matthew 10:16-20)
Luke records similar instructions by Jesus:
"When they bring you before the synagogues
and the rulers and the authorities, do not
worry about how or what you are to speak in
your defense, or what you are to say; for the
Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour
what you ought to say." (Luke 12:11-12)
He is saying that they need not worry about
how or what they will say when they are faced
with a difficult situation. This is a time
when there is either not enough time to
prepare or no way to know even how to prepare
for such an encounter. What will happen? The
Spirit will teach you in that very hour what
you ought to say.
Over the past seven or eight years I have
come to the point of practicing this
principle. When Diana and I walk into a
social dinner or charity event where we
aren't sure what to expect, we always discuss
before or on the way that we can count on the
Spirit of Jesus giving us whatever we are
there to do or what we are to say. We walk in
with not only a certain confidence, but with
a special anticipation of the opportunities
that are going to present themselves as we
encounter the people that evening.
There is another application of this
principle that I've been practicing. After
more than 40 years of disciplining myself to
prepare messages to deliver to a variety of
audiences, I have recently been changing my
approach. I have been spending more and more
time preparing my own heart and personal
relationship with Jesus and His Spirit. When
speaking to the needs of the moment, I am
experiencing a greater resonance and
empowerment with the people. It's as if the
Spirit of Jesus is directing everything I
say. It's not spooky; it's just more real.
It's SECRET #51: The follower of Jesus
doesn't worry what to say when put on the
spot.

Early in the teaching ministry of Jesus, He
said: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come
to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as
the Scripture has said, streams of living
water will flow from within him." By this he
meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in
him were later to receive. Up to that time
the Spirit had not been given. (John
7:37-39) NOTE the believer/followers of Jesus
will become channels of streams of living
water, flowing inside out. A
believer/follower of Jesus is a fountain of
spiritual refreshment. This brings us to
SECRET #50: The follower of Jesus has
the Spirit of the Master indwelling him like
a refreshing fountain.
When Jesus gathered His disciples in the
"upper room" before going to His death and
resurrection, Jesus taught a lot about the
Spirit: "And I will ask the Father, and he
will give you another Counselor to be with
you forever-the Spirit of truth. The world
cannot accept him, because it neither sees
him nor knows him. But you know him, for he
lives with you and will be in you." (John
14:15-17) He continues: "I have much more
to say to you, more than you can now bear.
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he
will guide you into all truth. He will not
speak on his own; he will speak only what he
hears, and he will tell you what is yet to
come. He will bring glory to me by taking
from what is mine and making it known to you.
All that belongs to the Father is mine. That
is why I said the Spirit will take from what
is mine and make it known to you." (John
16:8-15)
Here Jesus introduces more fully the coming
of the Spirit of God. Before Jesus came, the
Spirit came on believers temporarily for
specific tasks and missions. Now, Jesus says
the Spirit will be given to believers to be
with them forever and He will live inside all
those who are believer/followers of Jesus.
He is to be our constant helper and comforter
as we walk this walk. The Spirit of God
bears witness with our spirit that we are
children of God and He enables and empowers
us to work out into our lifestyles the
salvation that is within.
It's also important to note that the Spirit
of God is the key to Jesus' disciples doing
greater things than Jesus did. Jesus did some
amazing things, much of it was not even
recorded. Although it seems like so much
more, there are only 35 miracles mentioned in
the Gospels that Jesus performed. Now, as
Jesus' disciples are powerfully indwelt by
His Spirit, they will be able to bring His
miraculous touch to millions upon millions!
As you walk with Jesus and with others you
will get to know the Spirit. He will become
very real to you In your greatest weakness,
need, desperation, and troubles. In a lot of
ways the Spirit of God has been placed within
us to be our spiritual adrenaline.
The Spirit gives you the possibility to enjoy
a mighty and mature partnership with your
Creator-God! I see it following a natural
progression. FIRST-Possess the Spirit-You
possess the Spirit when you place your FAITH
in Jesus. SECOND-Possessed by the Spirit-Then
you become possessed by your FAITHFULNESS.
This is by your habits of holiness. It's not
that you get more of the Spirit, but the
Spirit gets more of you! THIRD-Practice the
presence of the Spirit-This is as you learn
to FOLLOW His lead. You will learn to
cooperate with His nudgings and promptings as
you grow older in your faith.
The last words of Jesus to His disciples were
about the Spirit: After his suffering, he
showed himself to these men and gave many
convincing proofs that he was alive. He
appeared to them over a period of forty days
and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one
occasion, while he was eating with them, he
gave them this command: "Do not leave
Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father
promised, which you have heard me speak
about. For John baptized with water, but in a
few days you will be baptized with the Holy
Spirit." So when they met together, they
asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going
to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He said to
them: "It is not for you to know the times or
dates the Father has set by his own
authority. But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be
my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
(Acts 1:3-8)
This is why Paul spoke so emotionally about
the Spirit in I Corinthians 3 and 6, when he
said, "Don't you know that your body is
the holy dwelling place of God? Therefore
glorify God in your body!" Don't you get
it? The very presence of God lives inside you
right now, so maybe it's time you ACT LIKE
IT. SECRET #50: The follower of Jesus
has the Spirit of the Master indwelling him
like a refreshing fountain.

Today we come to a most basic and frequent theme of Jesus'
teachings. Jesus had a fascination with children. Jesus held up little
children as the prime examples of what a model follower might look like.
In fact, Jesus makes it clear that being like a little child is
necessary for entrance into the Kingdom of heaven.
All four Gospel writers record Jesus'
teachings on this special entrance
requirement. In Matthew 18:3: And he said:
"I tell you the truth, unless you change and
become like little children, you will never
enter the kingdom of heaven." In Mark
10:15 Jesus says: "I tell you the truth,
anyone who will not receive the kingdom of
God like a little child will never enter
it." Luke repeats Jesus' words from Mark:
"I tell you the truth, anyone who will not
receive the kingdom of God like a little
child will never enter it." This is
SECRET #49: The follower of Jesus lives
his life as a little child.
Then, in the Gospel of John, in a very
familiar interaction with Nicodemus, Jesus
uses a little different metaphor to say the
same thing. He says in John 3:5: "I tell
you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom
of God unless he is born of water and the
Spirit." He goes on to say: "That
which is born of the flesh is flesh and that
which is born of the spirit is spirit."
Jesus is referring to being "born again" or
"born from above" and means something
different than what is normally believed.
Being born again is not a salvation
experience-a special faith event where a
person passes from death to life. Being born
again is just what it says. You are born all
over again, so that you are like a little
child again with all of the purity and
simplicity of being this childlike person.
What does that mean to be childlike? A little
child naturally trusts, knows very little,
and is eager to mimic what he or she sees. In
a very real sense, for an adult to become
childlike is to be willing to unlearn and
start over again with respect to what it
means to follow Jesus and not remain
dependent upon the religious system from
which he or she originally came.
So, in the case of Nicodemus, who was
probably the head of a rabbinical school,
Jesus was challenging him to rethink his
entire spiritual education-to start over and
learn the ABC's of what it means to grow up
spiritually into a personal relationship with
God through His Messiah Jesus. Once a person
turns from his ways and begins to act as a
little child, then he is being born again.
A few weeks ago I had breakfast with a man
who has rejected religion in the form of
Christianity. As he says, "I just can't stand
being approached by the 'born-againers' who
keep trying to save me from going to hell."
As we have been meeting together he is
becoming fascinated with trying to understand
who Jesus really is. He continually tells me
he knows nothing and wants to learn this
Jesus lifestyle and the basics. As we
discussed what it means to be born again, I
suddenly realized that my friend was in the
process of being born again. He's becoming
like a little child with respect to spiritual
things.
Becoming as a little child with Jesus means
the following: 1. You don't know everything.
2. All that you have been taught needs to be
stripped away. 3. You want to learn all you
can about this new life with Jesus. 4. In
order to learn more about the ABC's of
walking with Jesus, it's most helpful to
watch Him carefully and mimic what you hear
and see. 5. Learn to simply trust Jesus for
your life-your strength, direction and future.
Adults think they know everything and have the ugly habit of
trusting themselves. Children know they don't know everything and
therefore gladly develop the beautiful habit of simply trusting. Do you
want to enter the Kingdom of heaven? Become like a little child! SECRET

Within the very same context in the 10th
chapter of John as the shepherd motif Jesus
introduces another "I AM" signature. Let's
look at it. So Jesus said to them again,
"Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door
of the sheep. All who came before Me are
thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not
hear them. I am the door; if anyone enters
through Me, he will be saved, and will go in
and out and find pasture. The thief comes
only to steal and kill and destroy; I came
that they may have life, and have it
abundantly." (John 10:7-10) This brings
us to SECRET #48: The follower of Jesus
relates to the Master as the door.
Every detail of the shepherd's life lights up
the picture of the Good Shepherd whose sheep
hear his voice and whose constant care is for
His flock. The Jews did not understand the
meaning of the story of the Good Shepherd. So
Jesus, plainly and without concealment,
applied it to Himself. He began by saying:
"I am the door." In this parable Jesus
spoke about two kinds of sheepfolds. In the
villages and towns themselves there were
communal sheepfolds where all the village
flocks were sheltered when they returned home
at night. These folds were protected by a
strong door of which only the guardian of the
door held the key. It was to that kind of
fold Jesus referred earlier in this session
when He said, "But he who enters by the
door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the
doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his
voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and
leads them out."
But when the sheep were out on the hills in
the warm season and did not return at night
to the village at all, they were collected
into sheepfolds on the hillside. These
hillside sheepfolds were just open spaces
enclosed by a make-shift, wall. In them there
was an opening by which the sheep came in and
went out; but there was no door of any kind.
What happened was that at night the shepherd
himself lay down across the opening and no
sheep could get out or in except over his
body. In the most literal sense the shepherd
was the door.
That is what Jesus was thinking of when he
said: "I am the door." Through him,
and through him alone, men find access to
God. Jesus opens the way to God. Until Jesus
came men could think of God only as, at best,
a stranger and as, at worst, an enemy. But
Jesus came to show men what God is like, and
to open the way to Him. He is the door
through whom you may make your way toward the
God of gods.
This image focuses on the role of Jesus
fleshing out the invisible God of gods. This
is where I like to share this statement:
"Jesus is God here. God is Jesus everywhere!"
It's difficult, maybe impossible, to follow
and relate to the invisible God. This is why
Jesus is necessary! Jesus is God simplified!
I like to think of it this way. If there ever
was a man that was God in human flesh, He
would be like Jesus. It makes sense then that
Jesus is the most attractive, irresistible
and relevant person who ever lived!
Jesus claims that He came that men might have
life and might have it more abundantly. The
Greek phrase used for having it more
abundantly means to have a superabundance of
a thing. To be a follower of Jesus, to know
who He is and what He means, is to have a
superabundance of life. When we try to live
our own lives on our own, life is a dull,
dispirited thing. When we walk with Jesus,
there comes a new vitality, a superabundance
of life. It is only when we live with Jesus
that life becomes really worth living and we
genuinely begin to live life on purpose.
SECRET #48: The follower of Jesus relates to the Master as the door.
Jesus as the door is much like Jesus is the way. However in the case of
being the door, Jesus is the great protector of His sheep. He makes
sure His sheep stay safely within the
sheepfold and He makes sure that nothing that might threaten His sheep
can come in. Jesus is the door for His sheep.

The next "I AM" signature of Jesus is a
comforting one. It's all about our
relationship with Him as a shepherd. He plays
the role of shepherd and we are His sheep.
Here's how Jesus puts it: "Truly, truly, I
say to you, he who does not enter by the door
into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up
some other way, he is a thief and a robber.
But he who enters by the door is a shepherd
of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens,
and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls
his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead
of them, and the sheep follow him because
they know his voice. A stranger they simply
will not follow, but will flee from him,
because they do not know the voice of
strangers."
Several flocks of sheep were held in a pen
for the evening, each flock belonging to a
different shepherd. When it was time for a
shepherd to take his flock out of the pen, he
actually called his sheep. And the sheep
heard and recognized their shepherd's voice
and followed.
In this relational image of shepherd and
sheep we who are followers of Jesus are the
sheep. As His sheep we hear and know His
voice and follow. The challenge for us today
is three-fold: FIRST-We must do all we can do
to spend more and more time with our
shepherd, so we can get to know Him as our
shepherd-to get to know His voice when He speaks.
SECOND-We must be careful to take the time to
listen for our shepherd's voice. It's too
easy to be so busy making noise that we
aren't quiet enough to hear what Jesus is saying.
THIRD-The shepherd calls His sheep and leads
them out. We must wait for the shepherd to
speak and to lead out with His orders and
opportunities.
Jesus continues His teaching: "I am the
good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down
His life for the sheep. He who is a hired
hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the
owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and
leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf
snatches them and scatters them. He flees
because he is a hired hand and is not
concerned about the sheep. I am the good
shepherd, and I know My own and My own know
Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know
the Father; and I lay down My life for the
sheep."
It's from this teaching that we get SECRET
#47: The follower of Jesus relates to
the Master as the good shepherd.
Jesus views Himself as a shepherd-owner of
His sheep. He doesn't see it as a job that He
was hired to do, but He has a vital
relationship with His sheep. He owns them, He
loves them and will do anything He has to do
to protect them. So as we relate to Jesus as
our shepherd, we have a sense of real
security and protection from whatever might
happen.
Then Jesus shifts gears a bit and says
something very interesting. He says, "I
have other sheep, which are not of this fold;
I must bring them also, and they will hear My
voice; and they will become one flock with
one shepherd. For this reason the Father
loves Me, because I lay down My life so that
I may take it again." (John 10)
Who are these "other sheep" Jesus mentions
here? There have been several creative
interpretations of this phrase. The best way
to get what Jesus means is to understand who
His audience is. He is speaking primarily to
a Jewish audience here. So when He speaks of
"other sheep" He owns, it seems clearly that
Jesus is referring to all non-Jews who will
also be sheep who are owned by the shepherd.
This will turn out to be a big deal to the
Jews. They won't like it and will even
violently react to such a thought later.
This can especially be seen in the book of
the Acts of Jesus. The Jews had a rough time
giving up the idea that they owned the
shepherd. NOTE Jesus never says that the
sheep own the shepherd, but the shepherd is
the owner of the sheep.
Let me take this one step further for your
consideration. Just as the Jews had trouble
with this concept of not owning the shepherd,
so do Christians today have trouble with not
being the sole owner of Jesus, the shepherd.
Jesus is all-inclusive in that He will work
with anyone anywhere. He is not owned by any
group of sheep-not even the Christians. No,
Jesus is more awesome than this. He is the
shepherd-owner of the sheep. If you know Him
and hear His voice, then you are His sheep.
This is the relationship Jesus wants with
you. He wants to be your shepherd. SECRET
#47: The follower of Jesus relates to
the Master as the good shepherd. So,
get to know Jesus as your shepherd and listen
for His voice. Follow Him as your shepherd.

Now we come to the most insightful and vivid
image Jesus shares as one of His "I AM"
signatures. It's the relationship Jesus wants
with His disciples. Jesus is the vine and
those who follow Him are the branches.
Jesus says, "I am the true vine, and My
Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me
that does not bear fruit, He lifts up; and
every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it
so that it may bear more fruit."
Jesus continues this theme: "Abide in Me,
and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit
of itself unless it abides in the vine, so
neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am
the vine, you are the branches; he who abides
in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for
apart from Me you can do nothing."
"If anyone does not abide in Me, he is
thrown away as a branch and dries up; and
they gather them, and cast them into the fire
and they are burned." Here Jesus makes it
clear that not abiding in Him, your life is
as unfruitful and worthless as a dead branch.
On the other hand, Jesus says, "If you
abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask
whatever you wish, and it will be done for
you. My Father is glorified by this, that you
bear much fruit, and so prove to be My
disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I
have also loved you; abide in My love. If you
keep My commandments, you will abide in My
love; just as I have kept My Father's
commandments and abide in His love. These
things I have spoken to you so that My joy
may be in you, and that your joy may be made
full."
This is the basic teaching of Jesus that
reveals SECRET #46: The follower of
Jesus relates to the Master as a branch
relates to the vine. What I'm
learning is that abiding in Jesus as a branch
abides in the vine must be purposeful. It
means arranging your life, arranging your
prayer-asking and listening, and arranging
your silences in such a way that there is
never a day when you give yourself a chance
to forget Him. Now, if you are abiding in
Jesus in this way, the more you become like
the vine itself-you walk, talk, think and
love just like Jesus. Your thoughts are so
permeated with His thoughts that your inner
character is being transformed. Then, it is
easy to understand that your wishes are the
same as His wishes, so you are walking in
sync with Him and whatever wish you ask will
be done for you. Now that's mind-boggling!
But not out of the realm of possibility and
reality. Otherwise, Jesus would not instruct
us to be like this.
This is the most dynamic principle you'll
ever encounter! It's a reciprocal
relationship! You abide-remain, stay with,
wait on, hang out with, continue with Jesus
and Jesus remains, hangs out and continues
with you. Are you getting this? You are
created by God to be completely inhabited by
Him through Jesus!
Jesus goes on to say something that blows my
mind! I have read this over and over and
talked about it more than most passages of
Scriptures, but Jesus is speaking of a daily,
moment-by-moment reality. Just as a branch is
unable to be fruitful on its on, so we cannot
do anything without hanging on to our
relationship with Jesus. But wait a minute; I
can't do anything!!!??? What Jesus is saying
is that we cannot do anything without
recognizing, depending upon and drawing our
strength from Him. Can this be true? Is it
true in your life?
SECRET #46: The follower of Jesus
relates to the Master as a branch relates to
the vine. So, here you have it, IF
YOU DON'T ACT LIKE A BRANCH AND ABIDE IN THE
VINE, JESUS, you not only can do nothing
significant, but you are attempting to live a
life that is absolutely useless and
unfruitful. All you are left with is "What
might have been." It's an amazing simplicity
that takes over your life-a simplicity that
is really just transparency. "Abide in Me
and I in you." Jesus wants to inhabit
your life. All He is looking for is your
willingness to cooperate!

We are making our way through 75 secrets of
following Jesus. I use the term "secret",
because Jesus is said to be the mystery that
was revealed to the world. So, the secret has
the idea of a continual process of revealing
who Jesus is.
Today we come to another significant "I AM"
signature of Jesus. Let's examine it: Then
Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the
Light of the world; he who follows Me will
not walk in the darkness, but will have the
Light of life." So the Pharisees said to Him,
"You are testifying about Yourself; Your
testimony is not true." Jesus answered and
said to them, "Even if I testify about
Myself, My testimony is true, for I know
where I came from and where I am going; but
you do not know where I come from or where I
am going. You judge according to the flesh; I
am not judging anyone. But even if I do
judge, My judgment is true; for I am not
alone in it, but I and the Father who sent
Me. Even in your law it has been written that
the testimony of two men is true. I am He who
testifies about Myself, and the Father who
sent Me testifies about Me." So they were
saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus
answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father;
if you knew Me, you would know My Father
also." These words He spoke in the treasury,
as He taught in the temple; and no one seized
Him, because His hour had not yet come.
(John 8:12-20)
This is SECRET #45: The follower of
Jesus relates to the Master as the light of
the world. Just as Jesus is the new
manna sent down from heaven, the water from
the rock, He is also the cloud, the light of
God's holy presence among His people. "I
am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me
will never walk in darkness, but shall have
the light of life" (John 8:12). Just
before this Jesus claimed He was the living
water for all those who are thirsty. Now,
Jesus claims, "I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
to eliminate the darkness."
Jesus' claim of being THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
is a reminder of the cloud and the pillar of
fire that led the people through the
wilderness for 40 years-huge and striking in
size and symbolized God's presence with His
people. This great cloud of glory gave off
light by night and illuminated the way for
His people. By day the cloud led the nation
and gave direction. From the cloud God spoke.
The presence of God overshadowed them and
went with them in their wandering through the
wilderness.
It's the same cloud of glory that filled the
Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle and later in
the Temple in Jerusalem when the LORD came
down and met with His people. The pillar
dispelled the darkness of the night and any
would be attackers. However, the glory
departed from Israel. Much of the religious
ceremonies that continued was only ritual.
In Matthew 5 Jesus said, "You are the
light of the world!" Now He says, "I
am the Light of the world; he who follows Me
will not walk in the darkness, but will have
the Light of life.''
So, FIRST-He is the Light. SECOND-You have
the Light of life. THIRD-You are now the
Light of the world. Then note a few
observations of Jesus being the light of the
world in us.
1. We are all blind from birth-spiritually.
2. Jesus takes the initiative in healing our
blindness.
3. Jesus does a work of creation
(regeneration), not reformation.
4. People will notice, when you begin to see
differently.
5. It is very easy to get hung up in
peripheral theological issues and miss an
opportunity for ministry (light).
6. Jesus sees people and the world in a
profoundly different light than we do.
7. Some of God's greatest works are done in
most desperate human situations (darkness).
SECRET #45: The follower of Jesus
relates to the Master as the light of the
world. Embrace Jesus in this way and
you will never walk in darkness and will
never see people in the same light again.

Of all of the personal signatures-the "I
AM's", Jesus shared one that was possibly the
most intimate of all of them recorded in
John. Not only was it the most intimate, it
also stirred up the most controversy. Many
disciples walked away from Jesus over this
teaching. Their rejection was so hurtful to
Jesus that He turned to His early core
disciples and asked, "Are you going to walk
away from me, too?"
Here's a brief summary of His teachings:
Jesus answered them and said, "Truly,
truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because
you saw signs, but because you ate of the
loaves and were filled. Do not work for the
food which perishes, but for the food which
endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man
will give to you, for on Him the Father, God,
has set His seal." Therefore they said to
Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work
the works of God?" Jesus answered and said to
them, "This is the work of God, that you
believe in Him whom He has sent." So they
said to Him, "What then do You do for a sign,
so that we may see, and believe You? What
work do You perform? Our fathers ate the
manna in the wilderness; as it is written,
'HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.'"
Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say
to you, it is not Moses who has given you the
bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who
gives you the TRUE bread out of heaven. For
the bread of God is that which comes down out
of heaven, and gives life to the world." Then
they said to Him, "Lord, always give us this
bread." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread
of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger,
and he who believes in Me will never
thirst." (John 6:26-35)
Jesus scolds them for hanging around and
following after Him for the free lunch that
might come their way, referring to the
feeding of the 5000. That bread is nothing,
because it will perish! What they ought to do
is work for the kind of food that will not
perish, but is eternal. That food will only
come through God's Messiah-the Son of Man!
The people do an interesting thing. They ask
Jesus for a sign. He has just miraculously
fed 5000 and shown up miraculously across the
Sea of Galilee without a boat, yet they are
looking for something more. Their question
is a good one: "What shall we do, so that
we may work the works of God?" Or, "What
must we be doing as a habit that we may go on
working the works of God?"
Jesus answers them by saying, "This is the
work of God-believe in Him whom He has
sent!" The work of God is to BELIEVE
JESUS-to trust Jesus with your life-every
day! The struggle is to SIMPLY TRUST JESUS.
This is more than what we need to do, this is
all about what God is seeking to do. God
wants us to enter into the things that He is
doing and that begins and ends with believing
in Jesus and trusting Him with your life.
We're not to start a new movement, but join
God's movement-JESUS! We are in a
fellowship-an assembly of believers seeking
to walk with Jesus as we learn to walk
together. Can you see that this life is not
about going to church, but being the church
of Jesus?
All of the religions of the world have a
religious program of do's and don'ts to
absolve your sins-a program of begging to be
accepted and to be forgiven. All of the
religions of the world have a religious
program of works to do to be free to come to
God, which becomes a program of bondage to a
certain performance of works. By the way,
Christianity is not exempt from these
religious programs, but has offered some of
the most creative of all. Jesus comes to
reverse it all! You don't have to do
anything to be accepted, forgiven or free;
those would be works that perish anyway! The
work that God wants you to do is to BELIEVE
JESUS! Here we are back to JESUS PLUS NOTHING!
THE WORK OF GOD THAT WE ARE TO DO IS TO
SIMPLY BELIEVE JESUS-believe in Him, trust
Him and keep on trusting Him.
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of
life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and
he who believes in Me will never thirst. But
I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet
do not believe. All that the Father gives Me
will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me
I will certainly not cast out. For I have
come down from heaven, not to do My own will,
but the will of Him who sent Me." (John
6:35-38)
Those who heard Jesus' words began grumbling
against Him. In response Jesus explained
further and said: "I am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness,
and they died. This is the bread that comes
down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it
and not die. I am the living bread that came
down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this
bread, he will live forever; and the bread
also which I will give for the life of the
world is My flesh." Then the Jews began to
argue with one another, saying, "How can this
man give us His flesh to eat?" So Jesus said
to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless
you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink
His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He
who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has
eternal life, and I will raise him up on the
last day. For My flesh is true food, and My
blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and
drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
As the living Father sent Me, and I live
because of the Father, so he who eats this
bread I give, he also will live because of
Me. This is the bread which came down out of
heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he
who eats this bread will live forever."
(John 6:48-58)
Manna was sent down from heaven to the
children of Israel for their daily use. They
could not store it or it would rot, so they
had to gather it daily and eat it. It was a
daily sustenance for them to be nourished and
to remain healthy. Jesus points out to His
listeners that this supernatural distribution
of the manna in the time of Moses was good,
but all who ate of it are not still alive,
but they are all dead.
Jesus is really saying with reference to the
manna, "I'M THE NEW MANNA IN TOWN!" This is
why He says I AM the bread of life-the living
bread that offers eternal life to anyone who
eats it. If you believe in Jesus and trust
Him as your daily manna, you will never
hunger, never thirst, have eternal life and
will be raised up at the end. As with the old
manna in the wilderness, your relationship
with Jesus as the living manna must be
gathered and cultivated every day. If you try
to store it, you will lose its freshness. So,
it's a daily trusting of Jesus-depending upon
Him as if your life depended on it!
JESUS IS THE NEW MANNA IN TOWN! Take Him into
your life and allow Him to be your strength.
Embrace Jesus, the "bread", that keeps you
nourished, alive and spiritually whole. Jesus
wants the most intimate relationship with you
possible. He wants you to ingest Him as you
would bread and He, the bread of life,
becomes an essential reality in your life.
It's SECRET #44: The follower of Jesus
relates to the Master as the bread of
life.

Continuing with the relational "I AM"
signatures, one of the most powerful of all
has to do with the story of Jesus' close
friend, Lazarus. Jesus was probably in
Jerash, a couple of days from Jerusalem, when
He heard the news that His friend Lazarus had
died. Jesus didn't quickly go to Jerusalem,
but seemed to wait awhile before starting
out. This hesitation even concerned His
disciples, but Jesus took His time. The
theory is that Jesus waited on purpose to set
up one of the most amazing miracles ever. The
longer He waited the longer Lazarus' body had
to decompose.
Think about it! If Jesus was there right at
the death of Lazarus and raised Lazarus from
the dead, people could easily have said that
Lazarus wasn't really dead. But after four
days, there was no doubt that Lazarus was
dead-really dead!
When Jesus did show up, Mary and Martha, the
sisters of Lazarus, greeted Jesus with the
same exasperation. They each believed that if
Jesus had only been there, Lazarus wouldn't
have died. The account is in the eleventh
chapter of John: Martha then said to
Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my
brother would not have died. Even now I know
that whatever You ask of God, God will give
You." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will
rise again." Martha said to Him, "I know that
he will rise again in the resurrection on the
last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the
resurrection and the life; he who believes in
Me will live even if he dies, and everyone
who lives and believes in Me will never die.
Do you believe this?" (John 11:21-26)
NOTE Jesus brought up the possibility of
resurrection and Martha quickly thought Jesus
was referring to the belief of an end-time
resurrection. But Jesus wasn't talking about
doctrines or a set of beliefs; He was
referring to Himself: "I am the resurrection
and the life." Jesus was doing what Jesus
does best. He made it up close and personal.
This brings us to SECRET #43: The
follower of Jesus relates to his Master as
the resurrection and the life.
Then Jesus moved into gear to prove Himself
as the resurrection and the life by raising
His friend, Lazarus, from the dead after he
had been dead for 4 days. NOTE how Jesus did
the impossible and asked the people to do the
possible. Jesus asked the people to do three
things: FIRST-Jesus said, "Where have you
laid him?" Jesus knew where they laid
him. He made the cave where he was laid out,
but Jesus involved the people in the process
and they showed Him where Lazarus was buried.
SECOND-Jesus said, "Remove the stone!"
Jesus could have easily moved the stone.
Anyone who can raise a person from the dead,
after "Behold, how he stinketh!" can
certainly move a gravestone out of the way.
But again Jesus involved the people in doing
what they could do.
THIRD-Jesus said, "Unbind him and let him
go." Now, don't you think the grave
clothes would have been an easy deal for
Jesus to remove? Jesus asked the people there
to remove the grave clothes.
Then, Jesus did what only Jesus could do. He
walked into the tomb and said, "Lazarus,
come forth!" Now here is where Jesus had
to move into gear. Only God can tell a dead
person to get up and he gets up! So, Jesus
proved to be the resurrection and the life by
bringing Lazarus back to life!
Jesus wants us to DO THE POSSIBLE BY FAITH
THAT HE WILL DO THE IMPOSSIBLE! Jesus is the
agent of making impossible things possible!
After an encounter with what we know as the
"rich young ruler", Jesus and His disciples
had a brief discussion about impossibilities.
The disciples asked Jesus, "Who then can
be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said,
"With human beings this is impossible, but
not with God; all things are possible with
God."
You see this same theme throughout the
ministry of Jesus. The man lame from birth in
the early chapters of Acts, was healed in the
name of Jesus. That's impossible! The feeding
of 5000+ people with only one sack lunch.
That's impossible! The transformation of an
impassioned Pharisee, Saul, from one of the
most feared opponents of Jesus to become one
of His most well-known followers and
teachers. Impossible!
Now, here we have the resurrection of Jesus'
friend, Lazarus, after he was dead for 4
days. Very impossible, but Jesus did it! It's
not just that He pulled off a powerful work
of the resurrection; Jesus is the
resurrection and the life! SECRET #43:
The follower of Jesus relates to his
Master as the resurrection and the
life. To relate to Jesus in this way
means two things. FIRST-No matter how
impossible things seem to you, Jesus traffics
in the impossible and makes them possible.
SECOND-Jesus is the constant hope and power
that you can start over no matter what!

There are seven "I AM" statements by Jesus
recorded in the Gospel of John. Jesus is not
into making sure everyone knows a certain
body of knowledge or set of doctrines. He is
completely all about having a relationship
with each one who wants it. When He uses the
"I AM" pronouncements, it is clear He is
describing different dimensions or facets of
the relationship with you He desires. One of
the most familiar of these is found in a
setting with the disciples just a couple of
days before He heads to His death (John 14:1-6).
Jesus comforts His disciples regarding His
imminent departure from them to go to the
cross. He has mentioned this to them a few
times and now it is time. He says: "Do not
let your heart be troubled; believe in God,
believe also in Me. In My Father's house are
many dwelling places; if it were not so, I
would have told you; for I go to prepare a
place for you. If I go and prepare a place
for you, I will come again and receive you to
Myself"
I am convinced now that Jesus is referring to
His death and His coming again to receive
them personally is going to happen through
the resurrection-"that where I am, there
you may be also." Jesus wants us to be
with Him wherever He is. By the way, now
that's heaven-being in His presence with Him.
Then Jesus says, "And you know the way
where I am going." Thomas said to Him, "Lord,
we do not know where You are going, how do we
know the way?" (John 14:1-6) Do you see
how confused Thomas was with Jesus' words? He
is as confused as most Christians are today.
Thomas was thinking Jesus was referring to a
place-a location that can be found with a
good set of directions.
Jesus straightens out his thinking. Jesus
said to him, "I am the way, and the truth,
and the life; no one comes to the Father but
through Me." He's saying, "Thomas, you're
missing the point! I am not talking about a
place that you can find by a set of
directions or a map. That's not the way.
"I am the way!" Jesus is not
interested in getting you to go to some
special or heavenly location or place. The
important thing is not a place, but a person.
Jesus, Himself, is that person. He is the way!
With every one of the "I AM" pronouncements
or signatures by Jesus in the Gospel of John
there is a corresponding miracle or sign that
illustrates it. With this one the miracle is
the one in chapter 4 of John. Check it out.
Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee
where He had made the water wine And there
was a royal official whose son was sick at
Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come
out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and
was imploring Him to come down and heal his
son; for he was at the point of death. So
Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see
signs and wonders, you simply will not
believe." The royal official said to Him,
"Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus
said to him, "Go; your son lives." The man
believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and
started off. As he was now going down, his
slaves met him, saying that his son was
living. So he inquired of them the hour when
he began to get better. Then they said to
him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever
left him." So the father knew that it was at
that hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your
son lives"; and he himself believed and his
whole household. This is again a second sign
that Jesus performed when He had come out of
Judea into Galilee. (John 4:46-54)
Here's what I see here. The official came to
Jesus thinking that Jesus was the only way
his son would have a chance to live. Jesus
was the only way! Then Jesus spoke healing to
the official. Jesus was the truth! Then, the
official received word from his servants that
his son was healed at the moment Jesus spoke
the truth to him. The official then knew
Jesus was the life!
This is the foundation for SECRET #42:
The follower of Jesus relates to his
Master as the way, the truth and the
life. There is no place to figure
out, only a person to follow, because He is
the way, the truth and the life!

From the earliest times with the disciples
who were following Jesus most closely, there
was a discussion about positions in the
Kingdom. In the 18th chapter of Matthew there
was an interesting scene that begins with a
question from the disciples: At that time
the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who
is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
The answer Jesus gives is set forth in four
parts: FIRST-Jesus pulls in a child and
declares that no one will enter the kingdom
of heaven without becoming like a child. He
called a little child and had him stand among
them. And he said: "I tell you the truth,
unless you change and become like little
children, you will never enter the kingdom of
heaven."
SECOND-Then Jesus gets to the question of the
disciples more directly and says that the
greatest in the Kingdom of heaven has the
humility of a child. Jesus says,
"Therefore, whoever humbles himself like
this child is the greatest in the kingdom of
heaven."
THIRD-Jesus announces the blessing to those
who receive one child such as this. Jesus
says that by doing this they are receiving
Jesus personally. He says, "And whoever
welcomes a little child like this in my name
welcomes me."
FOURTH-Jesus warns of the curse upon those
who cause one of these little ones to
stumble. Jesus says, "But if anyone causes
one of these little ones who believe in me to
sin, it would be better for him to have a
large millstone hung around his neck and to
be drowned in the depths of the sea."
NOTE that there are basically two conditions
to enter the Kingdom. "Unless you are
converted" is the underlying theme here: 1.
Converted means to have a change of mind-a
change of mind toward Jesus. Conversion has
the idea of total surrender-a total change of
mind to be completely focused on Jesus. 2.
Unless you become like children-humble,
innocent, respectful and most of all, a
teachable, tender heart, you cannot be
converted in your heart and enter the Kingdom.
NOTE that this is a serious issue for Jesus.
Your actions and reactions must be pulled
into check. Your life is not just about you.
There are many looking on and following you
in your attitudes and actions. I like
thinking that you may be the only book on
Jesus and His teachings some people will ever
read and the only way Jesus will ever be able
to touch them, so pay attention to who you
are and what you do.
Later Jesus clarified this even more when He
said: "Do not be called leaders; for One
is your Leader, that is, Christ. But the
greatest among you shall be your servant.
Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and
whoever humbles himself shall be
exalted." (Matthew 23:10-12)
This brings us to SECRET #41: The
follower of Jesus is a servant of
all. Over the last few years we have
discovered a way to remind us to be a servant
to all. It's a simple question. It is: "What
can I do to help?" This question sets the
mood toward servant hood with those you
encounter, but most of all it sets up your
mood and mode of action. It's easy! "What can
I do to help?" SECRET #41: The follower
of Jesus is a servant of all.

Two gates, two guides, Now, two foundations.
"Therefore everyone who hears these words
of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to
a wise man who built his house on the rock.
And the rain fell, and the floods came, and
the winds blew and slammed against that
house; and yet it did not fall, for it had
been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears
these words of Mine and does not act on them,
will be like a foolish man who built his
house on the sand. The rain fell, and the
floods came, and the winds blew and slammed
against that house; and it fell-and great was
its fall." (Matthew 7:24-27)
This brings us to SECRET #40: The
follower of Jesus builds his life on a solid
foundation. There are two foundations
upon which you can build your life according
to Jesus. So, everything you do with your
life as it relates to hearing the words of
Jesus and practicing what He says affects how
well you cope with every storm that blows
your way.
NOTE similar things about each foundation: 1.
Each person hears the words of Jesus. 2. Each
person faces the same rain, floods, and
blowing winds slamming against them.
And note the differences between the two: 1.
Each person responds differently to the words
he has heard-one by acting upon the words of
Jesus and the other by not acting upon them.
2. Each person experiences a different
result-one does not fall down and the other
falls flat!
I am now convinced that most of us most of
our lives have lived our lives founded upon
the sand. It's what I call the "sandcastle
lifestyle". What Jesus is saying is so simple
and so profound. Jesus wants only two things
from us:
1. He wants each of us to listen to His
words. Instead of talking all of the time
when you pray, try sitting still and waiting
for Jesus to speak to you. You'll know what
He wants from you. You'll know what His will
is for you. I regret to say that I have spent
most of my life talking and not listening.
Therefore, I have missed out on what Jesus is
attempting to say to me. It's as simple and
as tragic as that!
2. He wants each of us to act upon what He
says to do-to practice what He says in your
daily life. Listen to Jesus and do what He
says to do, no more and no less. This is why
we have included the 3rd habit for our
lives-waiting on Jesus to lead out.
NOTE THE RESULTS: FIRST-If you hear His words
and are careful to do them, no matter what
comes in against you, your house will not
collapse!
SECOND-If you hear His words and don't do
them, the very same rain, floods, and winds
will come against you, then your house will
fall flat, dramatically! HOW'S YOUR HOUSE
STANDING???
Then, Matthew gives some insight on how
impactful Jesus' teachings here were: When
Jesus had finished these words, the crowds
were amazed at His teaching; for He was
teaching them as one having authority, and
not as their scribes. (Matthew 7:28-29)
Jesus spoke so powerfully that it amazed all
those who heard Him. This Jesus is for real!
Jesus is so attractive! Jesus is the most
irresistible One ever! He didn't quote any
other teacher; He was the teacher of
teachers, so do whatever you have to do to
carefully listen to Jesus diligently
practicing what you hear from Him. SECRET
#40: The follower of Jesus builds his
life on a solid foundation. That
foundation is the rock. His name is Jesus!

SECRET #39 is The follower of Jesus is
careful to do the will of the Father.
We just saw in SECRET #38 that Jesus makes it
clear that no matter what your lingo is,
calling Him "Lord", or what you have
done-spoken, cast out demons or healed in the
name of Jesus, or claim to be a believer in
Jesus, you may not enter the Kingdom of
heaven. There is only one qualification Jesus
gives in this context and it is: only "he
who does the will of My Father who is in
heaven will enter."
Jesus uses this same terminology when He was
making the point about who His real family
members are: And stretching out His hand
toward His disciples, He said, "Behold My
mother and My brothers! For whoever does the
will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My
brother and sister and mother." (Matthew
12:49-50)
Jesus first refers to God as His Father in
the 7th chapter of Matthew. It's interesting
to note that Jesus doesn't use the term
Father when speaking to the Pharisees or the
devil. The term Father is used primarily when
He is interacting with His disciples and
potential disciples. It's also interesting to
note Jesus is the only character in the
Gospel of Matthew to use the term Father.
Jesus identifies God as his own Father
through the use of the phrases my Father, my
heavenly Father, or my Father in heaven.
Jesus also makes several references to our
relationship with the Father. Jesus says:
"Let your light shine before men in such a
way that they may see your good works, and
glorify your Father who is in heaven."
"Therefore you are to be perfect or complete
in your love toward everyone, as your
heavenly Father is complete in His love of
everyone." "Your Father knows what you need
before you ask Him."
Why is this Fatherly image so vital? In a
sense, as Jesus shared His relationship with
the Father, it was a personal invitation to
enter into that same relationship with Jesus
and the Father. Jesus says that "No one
can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me
draws him; and I will raise him up on the
last day." (John 6:44) And in His prayer
to the Father in John 17 Jesus says: "I do
not ask on behalf of these alone, but for
those also who believe in Me through their
word; that they may all be one; even as You,
Father, are in Me and I in You, that they
also may be in Us, so that the world may
believe that You sent Me. The glory which You
have given Me I have given to them, that they
may be one, just as We are one;" (John
17:20-22)
I love the end of that prayer: "That they
may all be one; even as You, Father, are in
Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us,
so that the world may believe that You sent
Me. The glory which You have given Me I have
given to them, that they may be one, just as
We are one." The invitation for us is to
be in Jesus and the Father and they in
us-that we may be one together with them!
Paul Young, author of The Shack
opened up a thought to me that really makes
sense. Jesus makes it very clear that He only
does what the Father directs Him to do-the
will of the Father. Jesus says He does
nothing on His own initiative, but always
does things that are pleasing to the Father
(John 8). So, when Jesus' mother suggested to
Jesus that He help out their friends at the
wedding celebration and make some more wine,
Jesus said that it was not His time. Or, in
other words, He hadn't heard the word from
the Father to do such a thing. Then, shortly
after she told the servants to do whatever He
said, Jesus moves into gear and made the
finest of wines for the wedding feast. What
happened between the first rejection by Jesus
and the next move of actually following
through and doing it? He just received word
from the Father that this was the thing to do!
SECRET #39 is The follower of Jesus is
careful to do the will of the Father.
So, what does it mean to do the will of the
Father? I think Jesus answers this in His
next story where He compares the wise man and
the foolish man who built on two different
foundations. Here it is: "He who hears my
words and practices them" is the answer
to doing the will of the Father! Listen to
Jesus and do what He says. FOLLOW HIM!

Jesus discussed two gates-wide and narrow-and
now He paints a picture of two kinds of
fruit-two kinds of prophets or leaders. He
says: "Beware of the false prophets, who
come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly
are ravenous wolves. You will know them by
their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from
thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are
they? So every good tree bears good fruit,
but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree
cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree
produce good fruit. Every tree that does not
bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into
the fire. So then, you will know them by
their fruits." (Matthew 7:15-20)
This brings us to SECRET #38: The
follower of Jesus is cautious of false
prophets and teachers. This is a
significant and strong teaching about the
deception that is present within the circles
of those who claim to know Jesus and His
teachings. For years I have asked, "Who are
these guys?" And, the usual answer is filled
with a listing of everyone just to the right
or left of the one who is answering. But
Jesus gives us a clear understanding of who
these people are so that we can identify
those who are false and those who are genuine
with respect to their relationship with Jesus.
Now, don't get the idea that a false teacher
or false prophet has an FT or FP tattooed on
his forehead. It's not that recognizable.
However, Jesus does make it clear what the
difference is. That difference Jesus
articulates is more for a personal
examination first before you use what He says
as a litmus test to be applied to others.
Jesus warns that there will be false prophets
who seem harmless, but are out to destroy. He
says that you can decipher them by their
fruits. But even this may be difficult to
judge (conclusively judge) whether or not a
prophet is false or genuine, because many
false prophets show a certain kind of
fruitfulness in what they do. That's what
makes them so attractive!
But NOTE what the test here really is. The
term fruit is the operative word here. In
order to check out a prophet's fruit (not
their show or outward demonstration), you
need to observe the person and ministry over
a prolonged period of time. It takes time to
produce fruit. There is no instant fruit. So
watch for the fruit over a long period of
time and you'll know.
Now NOTE what these false prophets actually
do. This is amazing! "Not everyone who
says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the
kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will
of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord,
did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your
name cast out demons, and in Your name
perform many miracles?' And then I will
declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART
FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'"
(Matthew 7:21-23)
Jesus says that there will be people who come
before Him in the last days, calling Him
Lord, but will not enter the kingdom of
heaven. Just using the right language will
not get a person into the kingdom of heaven.
HOWEVER, the one who does the will of the
Father will enter-the person who not only
talks a good game, but walks it and proves it
out by his actions.
These people, Jesus says, will do 3 things
that will make it all the more difficult to
discern whether or not a person is a false
prophet. They speak in the name of Jesus-"Did
we not prophesy in your name?" They cast out
demons in the name of Jesus. They perform
many miracles in the name of Jesus.
WOW! These are some powerful things that the
false prophets do. So how can you tell the
difference between the false and the genuine.
Jesus offers two identifiers here of what
false teachers and prophets are all about.
First-Watch their fruit! Second-"Not
everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will
enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does
the will of My Father who is in heaven will
enter."
The deceptiveness of these false prophets is
another good reason why it's necessary to
keep: 1-Walking with Jesus 2-Walking with
others 3-Waiting on Jesus to lead out. THE
BEST DEFENSE AGAINST THE COUNTERFEIT IS TO
KNOW THE GENUINE VERY WELL. HIS NAME IS JESUS
AND ALL HE REQUIRES OF YOU IS TO FOLLOW HIM!
SECRET #38 is The follower of Jesus is
cautious of false prophets and teachers.

As Jesus continues His first extended
teaching session recorded by Matthew in
chapters 5-7, He shifts gears away from the
judging issue to a description of two
gates-the narrow gate and the wide gate.
Jesus puts it this way: "Enter through the
narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way
is broad that leads to destruction, and there
are many who enter through it. For the gate
is small and the way is narrow that leads to
life, and there are few who find it."
(Matthew 7:13-14)
NOTE the narrow gate is small and therefore
difficult to go through and the wide gate is
wide and therefore easy to go through. NOTE
also that Jesus begins with the command
urging us to enter in through the narrow
gate. Remember, the entire Sermon on the
Mount is answering the question, "How does
your teaching differ from what we've been
taught, Jesus?" His answer here is that to
follow Him and His teaching will be
difficult, but will lead to life. To choose
not to follow Him and His teaching will be
the easiest thing to do, because the masses
are going in that direction. Don't follow the
crowd. Follow Jesus!
Now that's the standard way of looking at
this passage. But there is something more
here. So much is made of the narrow gate
being so narrow that only a few find it. I
have a little different take on this imagery
of the narrow and wide gates. I see it as
Jesus making a very important point of how
people authentically embrace life rather than
destruction.
Think of it this way. When you are going
along with the crowd-even a good crowd, it's
so easy to pass up personal participation.
There is no way to tell whether or not
someone in the crowd really got it and
understood or actually participated in acts
of faith. But when you are within the context
of the few, participation is required and it
is very easy to tell whether or not someone
really gets it. When I meet with a
person-one-on-one, I know what they are getting.
Jesus came to launch a dynamic movement-a few
here and a few there, gathering together in
His name. This is where He promised to show
up-where two or three are gathered together.
And when Jesus shows up among the gathering
of the few, He changes lives dramatically and
authentically. This is vital! The church of
Jesus is all about transformation and that
transformation that leads to life happens
within a "narrow" space where you will
experience the life of Jesus within the
context of a relational few.
Jesus was into the power of the few! Instead
of going on CNN and seeking to produce mass
seminars, mailers and email blasts, Jesus
sought out three religious rejects to come
and be with Him. And, from this relationship
with the three, then the twelve and the
seventy-two, the Jesus movement rippled
throughout the world and the revolution is
still on today!
We are seeing this play out in our ministry.
We are focusing on the few and as those few
really get it, the message of Jesus spreads
like a wildfire. You see, within the context
of the few, you are able to really get to
know one another and put the principles and
teachings into practice. This kind of
experience is the taste of reality everyone
is longing for. This is the Jesus movement at
its best!
Jesus taught: "Where two or three are
gathered together in His name, He will show
up." This is what we want. This is what
we desperately need. SECRET #37: The
follower of Jesus will find himself walking
with a few.

Jesus finishes his teaching on how to make
some common sense judgment calls in the most
effective way possible. Step #1 is to JUDGE
WITH THE PROPER SPIRIT. Remember that in the
way you make a judgment call about someone or
something, you will be judged in the same way
and by the same standard as you judge. So be
careful how you judge others. Judge with the
proper spirit-with a balance of grace and truth.
Step #2 is JUDGE WITH THE PROPER STARTING
POINT. Start with yourself first. When you
see something wrong with someone else,
quickly go look in a mirror first before
saying a word about your friend. Take the
"log" out of your eye first, then you are
better able to help your friend with the
"speck" in his eye.
Step #3-JUDGE WITH THE PROPER SCREENING. Be
careful to share your judgments within an
appropriate context or you may face strong
resistance and maybe total rejection of the
wisdom you share.
Step #4-JUDGE WITH THE PROPER PERSPECTIVE.
Here's how Jesus taught this principle:
"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek,
and you will find; knock, and it will be
opened to you. For everyone who asks
receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him
who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is
there among you who, when his son asks for a
loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks
for a fish, he will not give him a snake,
will he? If you then, being evil, know how to
give good gifts to your children, how much
more will your Father who is in heaven give
what is good to those who ask Him!"
(Matthew 7:7-11)
When you judge with conclusion, common sense,
judgment, don't rely only on your insights
and wisdom. Be sure to seek God's perspective
on the matter. Ask for wisdom on the matter!
Jesus uses three action steps here to
describe how to seek after a proper
perspective-ask, seek and knock! It isn't
just ask, seek and knock, but ask and keep on
asking, seek and keep on seeking and knock
and keep on knocking. And, this is the best
part, as you keep on asking, seeking and
knocking, your heavenly Father will give you
exactly what you need! This is SECRET #36
The follower of Jesus judges by seeking
spiritual perspective.
Then Jesus sums up His teachings on judging
with the golden rule: "In everything,
therefore, treat people the same way you want
them to treat you, for this is the Law and
the Prophets." (Matthew 7:12) This same
principle can be found in other religious
systems, but only Jesus says it positively.
All others use the negative approach.
I call this teaching of Jesus THE PERSPECTIVE
PRINCIPLE. Jesus' perspective on judging is
just the opposite of what most think when
they say, "Don't judge!" This Jesus principle
requires that you be a judge-bringing
discernment into our world, so that we can
know what is right or wrong, good or bad, and
wise or foolish. Without sound judgment,
balanced with grace and truth, the entire
society is in danger of falling apart. So you
be the judge and do it Jesus' way!

Jesus is teaching about how to make some
common sense judgment calls in the most
effective way possible. Step #1 is to JUDGE
WITH THE PROPER SPIRIT. Remember that in the
way you make a judgment call about someone or
something, you will be judged in the same way
and by the same standard as you judge. So be
careful how you judge others. Judge with the
proper spirit-with a balance of grace and
truth. Judging another with truth only can be
harsh and lacks the relational dimension of a
proper spirit. Judging another with grace
only is weak and lacks the truth necessary to
get people back on track.
Step #2-JUDGE WITH THE PROPER STARTING POINT.
Start with yourself first. When you see
something wrong with someone else, quickly go
look in a mirror first before saying a word
about your friend. Take the "log" out of your
eye first, then you are better able to help
your friend with the "speck" in his eye.
There is a "speck" in his eye that needs to
come out, but your judgment as to how to best
help is distorted by what's in your own eye.
Your perspective is distorted.
Jesus continues His teachings on how to judge
with: "Do not give what is holy to dogs
and do not throw your pearls before swine, or
they will trample them under their feet, and
turn and tear you to pieces." (Matthew
7:6) This may seem to be out of place in
Jesus' teachings on how to judge another, but
I don't think so. This is Step #3-JUDGE WITH
PROPER SCREENING.
This is a warning by Jesus that your very
good, sound, common sense judgment calls must
be matched to the context where it is shared.
This is SECRET #35: The follower of
Jesus judges with a certain filtering.
When you judge with conclusion judgment,
don't just randomly make your judgment calls
wherever you might be. For instance, don't
walk into a bar and start making
pronouncements against drunkenness and
alcoholism. This will be throwing your pearls
before swine. They not only will not
appreciate your words, but they will not be
able to hear them at all. Your conclusions
will not be appreciated and they may have
valid grounds to criticize you.
Jesus uses two interesting images here. The
first is "giving what is holy to dogs." Moses
wrote about this very image. He recorded
God's words, "You shall be holy men to Me,
therefore you shall not eat flesh torn to
pieces in the field; you shall throw it to
the dogs."
That which is holy is that which is separated
unto God for His special purpose. God warns
the priests through Moses that any meat that
is torn to pieces in offering a sacrifice is
not holy and should be thrown out to the
dogs. On the other hand, Jesus is saying that
which is holy or that judgment conclusion
which you have made before God is special and
should not be thrown to the dogs as if it is
meaningless.
The second image is "throwing your pearls
before swine." The word pearl is where we get
the name Margarita or Margaret. It means to
have a value. Pearls look a bit like peas or
acorns and might initially deceive the pigs,
until they figure it out. Pigs or wild boars
were well known during that time in the
Jordan Valley. The way a wild boar,
especially if angered, attacks you is to run
at you with its tusks. It can't turn its head
and bite you, but must gore you and knock you
down. It tries to trample you.
When you make a proper judgment, you judge
with a proper spirit, start with yourself
first and be careful who you share your
judgments with. Your fine judgment calls
might not be received well. This can be
easily applied to your interaction with those
outside the faith. Don't just preach to
someone what you have determined or found to
be true. If the people you are talking with
are not interested in, leaning in a bit or
open to what you are saying, your audience
may tear you to pieces. And, who could blame
them?
The Good News of Jesus is that He loves and
accepts you just as you are. That, in itself,
can be offensive, if you are more interested
in earning your acceptance with God. Also,
50% or more of the people of the world are
turned off by Christianity and its religious
system. Unless you are able to disconnect
Jesus from Christianity, your audience may be
already turned off with your thoughts and
conclusions.
So be careful what you say to whatever
audience you encounter. SECRET #35: The
follower of Jesus judges with a certain
filtering.

If I were to write the song "What The World
Needs Now?", I would offer a substitute for
the normal answer of love. What the world
needs more than anything else right now is
good, sound judgment-common sense judgment.
We have become intoxicated with the spirit of
political correctness. This toxic spirit is
so fearful of offending someone, so there is
very little that is wrong, bad or foolish. In
fact, we don't even want our youth to feel
the pain of losing athletic contests, so many
don't even want to keep score, where one team
is the winner and the other a loser.
As followers of Jesus we have no right to
judge someone with condemnation. This is what
Jesus means when He introduces the idea of
judging. We are to judge-to judge by making
conclusions about what is good or bad, right
or wrong and wise or foolish. This is common
sense judgment. Common sense judgment or
discernment is woefully lacking today. And
when you make a conclusion kind of judgment,
there are four steps to keep in mind as to
how you go about making these kinds of
conclusions.
Step #1 is to JUDGE WITH THE PROPER SPIRIT-to
remember that in the way you make a judgment
call about someone or something, you will be
judged in the same way and by the same
standard as you judge. So be careful how you
judge others. Judge with the proper
spirit-with a balance of grace and truth.
Judging another with truth only can be harsh
and lacks the relational dimension of a
proper spirit. Judging another with grace
only is weak and lacks the truth necessary to
get people back on track.
Today we come to the second principle Jesus
teaches on how to judge: Step #2-JUDGE WITH
THE PROPER STARTING POINT. Jesus says it this
way: "Why do you look at the speck that is
in your brother's eye, but do not notice the
log that is in your own eye? Or how can you
say to your brother, `Let me take the speck
out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in
your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the
log out of your own eye and then you will see
clearly to take the speck out of your
brother's eye." (Matthew 7:3-5)
This brings us to SECRET #34: The
follower of Jesus judges himself
first. There is a really basic
principle underlying this principle of how we
judge things and one another. No matter what
you set out to do, begin with yourself. If
you want your child to be disciplined and
responsible, you must be disciplined and
responsible. There is no way you can give
away to your child anything you don't own
yourself, so you must begin with you.
We have really messed up this principle in
our sense of outreach or as many call it,
evangelism. So much time is spent investing
in better and more effective outreach,
however outreach must begin with you first.
In order to be most effective in your
outreach, you must reach yourself first.
Everything begins with you personally. This
has been violated over and over when it comes
to making disciples. Jesus commands those who
follow Him to make disciples of Him. The
problem is that most of those who are leading
discipleship classes haven't learned to be a
simple follower of Jesus yet. Therefore,
making disciples has been most ineffective.
When you judge with conclusion, common sense,
judgment, it's vital that you look at
yourself first. Don't go after the speck in
your brother's eye, until you have taken the
log out of your own eye. It's all a matter of
perspective. Once you remove the log out of
your eye, then you will be able to see
clearly how to take the speck out of your
brother's eye.
What's interesting is that when you haven't
dealt with your own "stuff", you tend to pick
away and condemn others for whatever their
"stuff" happens to be. And, when you haven't
dealt with your own "stuff", there are two
problems that emerge. First-you lack any
credibility to help another with his problem.
Second-with a log in your eye you can't see
well enough to help anyone else. In fact,
you'll probably poke your brother's eye out
while attempting to be a helper.
The violation of this secret, SECRET #34, is
rampant among those who call themselves
Christians or followers of Jesus. It's even
come to the point that the favorite indoor
sport for most churches is to come together
weekly and confess the sins of the world!
The follower of Jesus judges himself
first.
